Starting as a roadside stall in 1945, Songlin Bookstore is the oldest antiquarian bookstore on Taiwan's first second-hand book street, Guling Street, and has been continuously operated by three generations for 80 years. Books are not merely a conduit for authors' ideas to readers; from editing and binding to typesetting and printing, a book encapsulates a nation's cultural microcosm. Songlin Bookstore has witnessed the changing times, from the Japanese colonial period, the Nationalist government, and martial law to the opening up and democratic freedoms. The publications of different eras serve as a testament to the culture of their time.
